Soñé que era un extraño marchante: era un marchante de aspectos y apariencias. Los coleccionaba y los distribuía. En el sueño acababa de descubrir un secreto. Lo había descubierto solo, sin ayuda ni consejo de nadie.
El secreto era entrar en lo que estuviera mirando en ese momento –un cubo de agua, una vaca, una ciudad (como Toledo) vista desde arriba, un roble- y, una vez dentro, disponer del mejor modo posible su apariencia. Mejor no quería decir hacerlo más bonito o más armonioso, ni tampoco más típico, a fin de que el roble representara todos los robles. Sencillamente quería decir hacerlo más suyo, de modo que la vaca o la ciudad o el cubo de agua se convirtieran en algo claramente único.
Hacer eso me agradaba, y tenía la impresión de que los pequeños cambios que realicé desde adentro agradaban a otros.
El secreto para introducirse en el objeto y reordenar su apariencia era tan sencillo como abrir la puerta de un armario. Tal vez simplemente se trataba de estar allí cuando la puerta se abriera sola. Pero cuando me desperté, no pude recordar cómo se hacía y me quedé sin saber cómo se entra en las cosas.
